Aims and Activities
BACKGROUND and OBJECTIVES
The Foerder Institute for Economic Research was established in
1971 in memory of Dr.Yisyahu Foerder with a donation from Bank
Leumi; its objective being to support basic theoretical and
applied research in the Department of Economics at Tel-Aviv
University.
SCOPE OF RESEARCH
The scope of research covers many areas: the organization of
economic activity, game theory, industrial organization, technological
change and economic growth, urban and regional economics,
labor markets, financial markets, public economics, international
trade, monetary economics, and more.
FRAMEWORK AND RESEARCH ASSOCIATES
The Institute's research staff consists of members of the Eitan
Berglas School of Economics at Tel-Aviv University. The School
has an outstanding international reputation with an excellent
coverage of major fields. It features a unique blend of high
quality research on economic theory, applied econometrics and
policy formulation and evaluation. Its members publish regularly
in the best journals, including the American Economic Review,
Journal of Political Economy, Quarterly Journal of Economics,
and Econometrica. Their books are published by leading publishers,
such as Academic Press, Cambridge University Press, University of
Chicago Press, MIT Press, and Harvard University Press.
Their work is widely known and plays an important role
in the development of several fields. Their graduates
occupy important positions in universities and the business
community.
WORKING PAPERS
Every working paper reports the results of a particular study
undertaken in the institute, be it theoretical, applied, or
policy-oriented. The working papers are distributed through
an exchange program to other research institutes in Israel and
abroad, as well as to university libraries, central banks,
government agencies, and similar interested parties in Israel
and abroad. Studies of large scope are published in book form.
VISITORS
The Foerder Institute for Economic Research cooperates with
the Eitan Berglas School of Economics in promoting visits by
distinguished economists to Tel-Aviv University. In the past,
many outstanding economists, including Nobel Laureates Kenneth Arrow,
Milton Friedman, Lawrence Klein, Franco Modigliani, Paul Samuelson and
James Tobin have visited the school. The institute is always looking
to incorporate future visits into its activities.
SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS
Associates of the Foerder Institute for Economic Research
participate regularly in major scientific meetings, such as
those of the American Economic Association, the European
Economic Association, the Econometric Society, the International
Economic Association, the Israel Economic Association, and more
specialized meetings organized by research institutes such as the
American-based National Bureau of Economic Research where the work
of the Foerder institute is presented by its research associates.
PUBLIC POLICY INVOLVEMENT
Associates of the Foerder Institute for Economic Research participate
in public debates and the formation of policy. It has been traditional
for members of the Eitan Berglas School of Economics to be involved in
important policy discussions. With the help of the institute and its
research activities, the school's input into current policy formation
will be enhanced.

The Sackler Institute for Economic Studies promotes theoretical and
applied research in economics in a wide range of areas such as game
theory, industrial organization, public finance, international trade,
monetary economics and more. The Institute's research staff is made
up of members of the Eitan Berglas School of Economics at Tel-Aviv
University.
